Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I wear jeans and sneakers and no lab coat. Sometimes I wear a warm-up jacket. I am uber-casual.

I spent a lot of time crawling around on the floor with my patients.

Sometimes I call them "Sweetie" or "Sweets" or "Sweetie Pie". I also do a lot of sweet-talking and cajoling.

I draw lots of pictures for people about how their dog's wiring is laid out and why the symptoms mean the problem is specifically in X location in the nervous system. But I never have a pen (because I have no lab coat pocket to put it in), so I always am bumming pens off people and then immediately losing them.

I'd rather be called Sweetie than Buddy.

Don't plan on crawling on the floor, though. It hurts my knees.

I feel pretty good. I also have Tramodol if I need it. I rode 13 miles on my trike today and took a couple afterwards as preventive medicine.

I see my GP this Tuesday and my trauma docs said I could do without if she oks it.

In the middle of this the on call doc calls me into surgery to help out with a disaster. The point is as much as we try to respect others time and as much as we try to adhere to a schedule that is realistic, every day is different and every patient wants you to spend time and not rush through their appointment. It's a crap shoot. Sometimes everyone is happy. Sometimes everyone is pissed. But it's all in the service of trying to do the right thing and respect everyones needs.
I'm not blaming doctors so much as their schedulers.

BTW, everyone deserves days off. I never complain about anyone's hours or how much cash they make and that includes doctors.

Sometimes I complain that I don't get any sick days or personal days, If I'm sick I don't get paid.

My cousin was listening to me whine once and her reply was, "you work 4 days a week, you have a day off every week".

Oh yeah. Good point.

BTW, what Stoney was talking about is different than what you experienced. Your reschedule at the last minute was either a scheduling screw up- double or triple booking (which most doctors just suck it up and see anyway). Or last minute procedure that had to be scheduled, something urgent. Or the sudden need for the doc to take the day or part of it off- sick kid, crown that fell off, or appealing tennis match.

I had a 3.5 days/week schedule once. I worked 20 hours at night, 20 hours during the day at the MSU library, they let me combine nights and days so I had 13-15 hour days.

Long days of sitting in front of computer doing nothing, but having every Thur-Sunday off fresh out of college while still living in a college town was some of the best years of my life.

I used to sorta have to daily wear suits that cost damn near as much as my Cannondale and BMC bikes. Plus the shirts, ties, socks, and shoes that went with it. Best thing I have to to say about them days, besides they're behind me, is they came with a job that's left me fully golden age funded. Only time I wear even jeans these days is when I'm operating a chain saw.
