Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bikes: Thylacines...only Thylacines.

You know what? I reckon this years' Tour is going to be a cracker.

Who are we tipping for the podium? I have high hopes for Evans and Rodgers, but Leipheimer and Popovych look strong too. So does Hincapie. Landis just looks disorganised and very silly in yellow and green, but hopefully will get his ***** together to make the race more interesting in the upcoming weeks.

My inner mountain biker wants to see Evans and Rasmussen in some spirited riding up in the big hills, which let's face it, is what the tour is really all about.

This week though is going to be a wide open sprintfest, and judging from the ITT, it looks like there's so many sprinters on form this week.

Hopefully SBS can learn how to broadcast in the meantime. Last night was a new low in quality from those guys- I didn't know wtf I was watching half the time, and neither did the commentators.

*EDIT*

Okay, done a bit of research now. So there's three ITTs during the Tour this year, so we're really looking at guys who can climb as well as ITT. Maybe Thunder can chime in here.

Unless the undergrowth is so lush, it pokes through the tights! Then it just looks plain odd.

It will probably feel even stranger when you get in the pool (given your triathlon ambitions) you kind of feel more streamlined tho - it's weird.

BTW I hope you didn't just go to bike short length....fur shorts with the budgie smugglers - not at good look!!

And waxing only hurts for a second...but it takes effort to arrange so shaving suits my laziness better.

Geez I was so glad that Hincapie missed out on the yellow last night. I don't think I couldn't handle all the "LA's faithful lootenant" blah blah blah.... Phil Ligget still managed to mention LA enough times last night that I was starting to think he was gunna ride

OT: Miss Ameria 2006 on at the moment....mmmm

Hehehe...Funny you should say this. I've just return from Coles...To get a different razor for the legs.

Looking forward to the first swim...Tuesday Morning.

I did a search on the boards for 'how far' one shaves. I thought I'd stopped at the nut crakers though...too much information??

I thought the strangest feeling was getting under the sheets, but that was about 20 years ago, so I can't believe I can still remember

I got a good look at Boonen's alu Campag cranks, and I could clearly see the "177.5mm"

also, I was trying to check out the bikes, but I reckon we'll get a much better look on the cyclingnews.com pics in the coming days

ha, 177.5 is nothing. I have a mate who needs 205 cranks. They only come as custom jobbies.

I did get enough of a look at the CSC bikes, Cervelo P3. I dunno they just stuck out.

They quickly showed Julich's elliptical chain rings, whats the go with them? I did remember reading that they are pretty much bull ****.

he's a short article: https://www.cyclingnews.com/tech.php?...ures/non-round

.....which includes Shimano's view:

"Shimano even goes so far as to say that its own in-house research suggests that round rings actually perform better, particularly in race situations and if the rider already has a good pedal stroke. According to Shimano's Jasen Thorpe, "The current set of non-round rings adversely affect cadence since your legs are moving at a non-constant speed. Since the motion is not constant, there is more energy required to repeatedly re-accelerate a rider's feet. The differences are subtle, but subtle is everything at this level." Interestingly, these comments would also apply to Shimano's own Biopace non-round chainring offerings which the company quietly dropped in the early 90s after failing to win widespread acceptance among riders.

He's a qualified Serotta fitter so he knows his fit quite well. His nickname is Stretch, and rides something like a 62 or larger with monster long stems.

He was looking for some 180s recently, although 205 would be his ideal. I'll let him know you have some Oz.

I don't see why not. At the most you may need to change the chainrings.

MotoGP on Foxtel now, 250cc about to start but why oh why do we have those two losers blathering on forever before they actually throw to the live feed?

Now this brings up a viewing dilemma, MotoGP or TdF? Decisions, decisions.

They're real, but they're not for real as they're a compact crankset: "FSA SLK CARBON COMPACT 50x36T"

They don't have the DuraAce 10spd BB, but use a "MEGA-EXPO BB" which is probably equivalent to my 9spd ultegra BB (said without any reasearch)
