Heya,

Just thought I'd jump in with semi-random question for the Aussies on the forum. Is there much of a vintage road bike market in Australia (specifically Sydney)? I'm wondering whether to bring mine back from overseas with me, or whether I can save myself some airline trouble and buy another when I get there.

I've decided that I really like old road bikes, and am hoping to put of any forays into the world of new (and horribly expensive!) bikes for some time yet.

Thanks.

you could definitely get something 2nd hand if you want an excuse to buy a new bike (:)), but the prices of new bikes down here has gotta be just about the worst in the western world!!!

you DON'T wanna buy a new bike down here

Here's the Sydney Trading Post (not all items are online)
http://www.tradingpost.com.au/browse...e=&sMsg=Search

and here's the Aussie Ebay bike section
http://sportsgoods.listings.ebay.com...istingItemList

womble 07-03-05 02:52 AM

Thanks for that- for some strange reason Ebay had skipped my mind. I'd already had a look at the Trading Post and it looked to be full of newer bikes.

Is there much of a vintage presence in Oz though? I see decent old road bikes all the time here in Vancouver. Are older bikes in Australia any good or are they complete clunkers? From my perusal of Ebay AUS and general familiarity with Australian culture, I'd be guessing at the latter.

Yeah, I was shocked at the price of MTB bikes in Oz (along with just about any other imported luxury or sporting good) when I moved back after being away for 8 years. It seems to be almost worth flying to the US just to buy a bike!

Ah well, so far it looks like I'll be bringing my bike back with me. Ironic, as shipping is going to cost more than the bike itself!

531Aussie 07-03-05 02:57 AM

how "vintage" are you talking?

I'm sure we have similar stuff down here, just much less of it.

There's only about 5 million people in Sydney ( i think) and about 4 mill in Melbourne, so, I guess the numbers
will be down.

We would not have been able to build our tandem without a trip to the states. From my experience, the market here is really fickle. If you bring some stuff to sell, it's pretty much hit and miss on what folks want, due to the limited size of the market. If you're looking to buy, you may have a pretty limited choice.

womble 07-03-05 03:01 AM

Anything from the 80s. It's not that I like old equipment just for the sake of age, but rather I have found that it can hold its own against much newer and more expensive stuff.

Yes- the small market size is a big problem for consumers. It seems to reduce variety and jack up prices something amazing.

climbo 07-03-05 05:03 AM

Get whatever you can and bring it back is my advice, stuff a suitcase full of spare parts too.

And in other news...

Australia has ended the US domination of women's Lacrosse with a resounding 14-7 win in the World Cup, the first time the Americans have lost the title since 1986.

Who knew?

jock 07-03-05 05:24 AM

We have a lacrosse team do we? Can't wait to see the replays on TV

Mike T on SBS said something along the lines of "Vinokourov's heart rate will be pushing up at 150 bpm or even more during the time trial"... funny :)

Boonen, how good !

climbo 07-03-05 04:20 PM

and "Hell on Wheels" - was kinda boring don't you think ?

what's with the ugly face/devil tattoo thingy on Zabel and Kloden, any meaning to it? Why do they both have it?

pshaw 07-03-05 05:30 PM

HOW was better on the big screen...

Yep Boonen is unreal but will he be fightin for Green in 3 weeks?

So who stayed up for the prologue? Unreal watchin the catch live..!

Thought Phil wasnt 'on the rivet' when he said "Is the tour over already?, Has Armstrong won the Tour on day 1 after 19KMs" or something like that....

Has anyone heard anymore on Jan riding thru the pace car rear window? Someone told me he was riding past a boulangerie and didnt see the car stop ;)

pshaw 07-03-05 05:33 PM

went out for a loop of the coast on Sunday.... didnt pass another bike....
Conclusion
1. No-one else watched the TV and was up early.
2. Everyone else watched the TV and decided give it a miss.

And caught the science of Lance last night... dissapointing all round... way too little science....

climbo 07-03-05 05:50 PM

or... 3. was up early painting the deck.

pshaw 07-03-05 05:54 PM

Luke Roberts told Cyclingnews that last night, they celebrated with a glass of champagne each and a scoop of ice cream. "Anyone who had a scoop of ice cream had to sit on the front all day. Because I was going to have to do it anyway I thought I may as well have the ice cream," grinned Roberts.

LOL

LOL

See Bjarne also told Zabriske he could be a GC rider if he lost 5kg. I wonder if he had any ice cream?

150bpm...damn, that's my resting HR. Watched 'Hell on wheels' on Satd'y night. Makes my complaints after riding 80k's just simply girly man b*tching and whining.

Gotta ask Ed, why would you put yourself through that day after day?
