Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I'm racing in Prospect Park at 6:30AM on Saturday and I just agreed to do a 50 mile tempo ride with my pal Sat afternoon as a tune up for his High Bridge race Sunday.

That will be a lotta miles.

then why do a group ride? go ride on your own and when you ride in the group rotate in the line at the same speed as everyone else.

bc other people usually want a chance to pull. its the point of the group ride. you're the guy on the ride that everyone hopes gets a flat.

Edit: you need aero bars to pull at 18 mph?

same here, the only group I've seen that slow is the "intro to road cycling" ride a local shop does. The C group usually doesn't drop under 20mph.

I don't know what you're getting at, the c group 60-80 mile ride usually gets about 300 ft of total ascent. thats some serious climbing!

holy crap razor is strong! from the post he made that he was going out til the next post an hour and a half passed. Considering he needs to gear up then take off the gear once home, I'm going to assume he rode for 1:15 and covering a minimum of 30 miles he was going at least 24 mph average. DAYUM!
