Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

thought so, you'd piss off quite a few motorists which would have been funny, esp if there were like one hundred of you hogging two lanes

speaking of motorists, what are the people like? any nasty stuff happen to any of you?

Why I ask, just reading this post with a dude complaining he's no faster on his new Specialized Allez Elite than he was on some old bikes. This reminded me of a trip I just took with two mates, one on a brand new Orbea flat barred roadie, the other on a Hybrid that had done many miles. I was on my 1991 Trek 920 mountain bike with the original STX hubs and semi-slick tires. Anyway, I was the quickest roller, followed by my mate with the hybrid, with the new Orbea slowest. But that should have been the fastest as it would have had the best hubs and the narrowest, fastest tires. Only reason I could think was that hubs might be like car engines and they have to wear in to give their best. Is that the case?
Hitchy, Ed, Thylacine, and probably everyone else know more about this stuff than I do, but they won't have time to give you a lengthy response -- them being high-rollers, and all. I think they all work at the top end of Collins St.

I have been told that bearings do need to be worn in, especially sealed bearings, but in my opninion, overall weight is the main "roll" factor. I'm a big fat 88kg 'at the moment', and I out roll EVERYBODY, and I'm pretty sure it's the weight.

Like most other attributes of a bike, rolling speed probably can't be put down to one component, so I'd say it's gotta have something to do with the tyres, the whole wheel, and maybe other stuff.....not sure.

I've got a theory that's supported by a few old wise bike shop guys, that sealed bearings are a teeeny weeeeny bit slower than a cone and balls, not that would really notice it in a side by side roll-out. I've done some crude "spin tests" at home, and the cone hubs win every time. Many guys will say that sealed units create more friction, especially the older sealed hubs that have an "industrial" type bearing like an SKF, or whatever. These guys claim that industrial bearings are designed more for heavy loads and very high speeds, not low resistance at low loads and low speeds.

Wait for Tyhlo to crack up at my urban myth spruking

Sorry about that, the software is intended for motorists who wanna get summawhere in a big fat hurry. And I know nothin about Melbourne except the route to Fern Gully from the city (don't ask!).

I just checked with Virgin. Cheapest I can get is $270, and that doesn't include the bike, so I'll skip the inaugural run. I'll save my nuts and berries ready for another one early next year. Maybe a quick roll from Bendigo to Melbourne, or something equally insane. And make sure there's beer involved somewhere, not just sissy cakes and cappu-fargin-chino.

Hey Hitchy, in that Phil Anderson article in Cycle Sport, the most recent photo
of him has what looks like a Felt behind him.

What's going on there?

I told Baldsacc the other day that Felts were in the same boat as Norcos and Meridas, etc

He said that he nearly bought one (he had a Giant ), they

...they are out here...although judging by some of the threads around here the 'seppo's' get pretty excited about 'em......haven't had much of a look at the mag yet....was out on the bike last nite...but will check it out.....BTW, I wouldn't be takin' any notice of a bloke on a giant, (unless he admits that he bought it cos it was cheap!....honesty i can live with!)

Weather 101, Room 244, Science & Technology building, 1 x 1hr lecture:

Pay attention

On days like today, with a strong northerly and moderately warm temperature,
the big blue blob on the weather radar does not give us huge rainfall due to something
called "virga". This is when the rain evaporates before it hits the ground.

So, if you see a huge blue blob with a northerly, like this, it doesn't necessarily mean we're gunna get saturated.https://mirror.bom.gov.au/products/IDR022.loop.shtml

Thanks 531. For what it's worth, I'm 88 myself. Obviously a good healthy weight range.

As for the mate on the Orbea, he's 92 so it can't just be weight. But yeah, I guess to many factors.

As long as my newey rolls alright then I wont care.

WAAAAAAAT!!!!

How in gawds name do you toss up buying a Giant and a Roubaix, and get a Giant? The nob.

Got to say I've read a few reviews on the things. Apart from the different possie that they mostly end up liking, I haven't really heard a bad thing about them. Had to listen to the w4nkers at the bike store yesterday blather on for 15 minutes about other peoples opinions being worth sh1t all. But as per statistics, when you can get a large enough sample to allow you to sort the wheat from the chaff, you can get an idea.

I'm sure it will be a big change from a tinsey 13 year old mountain bike anyway. I cant wait.

[edit] Geez it gives me the ***** having half my posts starred out.

Yeah, that would be great. I've got to attend an engagement party in Orange on that day though. We'll have to see about the next one though.
