I have a feeling it was a tribute.

This is seriously one of the ugliest bikes ive ever seen on bike forums, prolly usually sounds like he knows what time it is but this ... I mean the parts are all quality but it's so wrong ..bad colors, bad angles ....its like 5 diferent bikes hapening at once ...Frankenstein bike and all that sh.it ...sorry prolly you do good work but you ****.ed up big time with this one .

wroomwroomoops 02-18-08 07:15 AM

My only serious problem with that bike is the front rim decals. I like the pink and the brown and the violet - brown and violet go together well, and pink isn't bad in that combo, either. Anyway, that's what I think.

If I got that bike I would be happy, because I would simply remove the decals and have a very likeable bicycle.

dookski 02-18-08 07:53 AM

that wheel is probably a lot less obnoxious when it's rolling down the street.

johnprolly 02-18-08 08:00 AM

Son of Ronex, I really don't care that the Surly offends you. It's my "ugly" bike. I've said it 100 times. that bike it meant to be ugly as f uck.

It's a Surly. The uglier it is, the less i feel any attachment to it and the less likely someone is to steal it as well... Wait to you see it's next incarnation.

[the pink rim is Tom's... he's lending it to me until I can relace my other wheel]

Color me jealous. That looks like more fun than should be allowed by law.

I usually don't get on other's bike, but it can be said that you messed up that classic bike of yours with the Aerospoke Son Of Ronex but don't think I'm trying to pick a fight. I think we all do it at one point or another and I've had plenty of incarnations that were attrocious myself but I loved the way it looked and that's all that matters....well that and of course riding the bike as well:D

Which part are they least likely to steal? The $70 seatpost, the $80 stem, the $250 wheels or the $200 cranks?

Here you go -- it's not pretty, because my Dremel-fu is weak, and the paint's pretty chewed up. The red line shows where it ended originally; like I said, there wasn't a whole lot of adjustment required.

The dropouts on this frame are hefty, so if I was feeling enthusiastic and wanted to have the classic gearing, I could maybe grind away enough to get me to 32:16. fixmeup reckons I'd need to go about 1/4" towards the front of the frame -- there's enough metal for that, but I'd also need to grind more away to make it possible to remove the wheel.

Honestly, though, if I was going to go fixed-gear on the trails I'd probably want a flip-flop hub so I could freewheel on the downhills, or I guess at worst have 32:18 for the uphills, 32:14 for the downs (which is fairly close length-wise) and do something stupid like carry a spare chain for the switchover.. Or I could put on a second front chainring and have 32:18 -> 36:14, I guess. I'm sure I've seen a picture of that somewhere; http://sheldonbrown.org/hercules.html talks about it in passing.

Grinded: The past tense of sexually driven dancing i.e. Bumped and Grinded

Ground: 1. Earth, what you walk on 2. Past tense of the verb grind

Began building this over the weekend. Its a centurion ironman conversion. Quick rattlecan job over the ugly paint. Seat is getting replaced, still needs a rear brake cable, dunno yet about the bars, clips coming soon, and i think ill swap the chainrings as 39:16 isn't wonderful. chain slack also needs to be dealt with.

people steal bikes in new york city if they LOOK expensive. I.e. a lot of logos, ect.

No bike theif is going to know that seatpost is out of production and the difference between PAUL hubs and Formulas seeing as how you didn't even know those were $400 wheels.

Yeah, the first pictures I posted were how I bought it. I never intended to keep it that way, I just wanted to find out more about the frame.

The rims are Mavic Open Pro CDs. They're light and have stayed true for over a year, and I like that they look like old anodized tubulars
