ok, finally got decent pics of my piece of ***** craigslist baby.
I love her. or him. it's genderless, but named CP Stealth (CP referencing the head tube sticker, of course).

That Umazewa absolutely kills. It looks like an NJS English
path racer, with the color and the font.

Im not sure if it makes the chain weaker but it sure doesnt make it stronger.
Same with the hollow pins.
Looks real nice though.

I have alot of friends who bmx and use that chain and have never had a problem with it.

i broke a regina sl hollowpin in ~1990 during an uphill sprint. ouch.

the logical side of me knows that todays materials and manufacturing is likely much better, but i still don't see myself ever trusting one again...i don't care who makes it.

Not that I have an opinion in this debate, jus' sayin.

I know this, but they also grind and the chains are occasionally involved. oh well.

I used the brake-pad holders off 4 V-Brake arms (long slotted pieces that sit perpendicular to the brake arm. I have a near infinite supply of free v-brakes from my friends LBS, and I have too many pairs at home anyway). I cut them off, filed them up and used 4 M5 screws and the v-brake pad end cap bolts. Works perfectly.


And regarding the hollowpin chains. I use a KMC X10SL for road and I have 14000km on it. It hasn't broken, despite many hard uphill sprints. You have a smaller chance of breaking a chain on mtb than road, road than fixie. BMX is in there somewhere.

Yahoo auction frames are going for anywhere from 40,000-80,000 yen ($324-650) and sometimes more. There is also a steady stream of dinged keirin bikes with all their components. The nicer ones are closer to a grand. Kalavinka's in particular have been hitting 180,000 every once in a while.

The guy I got my frame from is a keirin raced in Shikoku and puts a up a good number of Umezawas (from Shikoku). I think he is putting them up for the shop, but he's also sent up a good number of Vivalos and Samsons.

I am a grad student and here for my dissertation research till the end of summer next year. I lived here previously for almost 6 years total in a couple of stints 1998-2006.

.....as for the KMC chain, give me a sense of the danger? Of course I just bought it for the looks :) . I do see lots of people riding them here on fixed gears, many with no brakes, so I didn't figue it was a problem. And I got it a pretty spcialized fixed gear/keirin shop that ecommended it (Kalavinka) Has anyone here had bad experiences with those chains directly, or just hollow-pin in general?

I do have a front brake and use it for going fast since I commute on big streets (though I have recently discovered the comfortable speed limit that a 17t cog brings...). For lazy riding I stop by back pedaling and sometimes hops/skids. But a broken chain would be bad..... small price to pay for fashion unless I wreck hard ;)

KMC makes alot of different chains. I ridden 4 types of their chains. I got 2 of them at the Tokyo bike show in 2004.

Oh, a Fuji Track. I'm thinking about buying one for daily commuting, in ANY weather. It's pretty cheap here, around 320-350$. How is it? Is it a good ride?

I'm gonna use it pretty much stock (with a front brake though), well maybe I'll swap the bars and put a fender on the back, but that's it, I want a cheap good ride. And about the stock gear ratio (48/16), is it too tough?

My other bike here that I used to stave myself while building the Umezawa is a Fuji track and I like the (steep) stock gears, but I like to go fast and I don't mind pushing hard up hills. I am glad I had a brake on it.

I found it to ride fine, but I liked the Biachi Pista a bit better. The Pista isn't as good a bargain here though. As for the Fuji, the stock tires (basic Kendas) didn't last long and the stock pedals are big and aggressive like mtn pedals, but I didn't mind them too much. The stock seat is/was super cushy. I think mine is last year's model.

About tires, you say they don't last long. Do you skid a lot? I'll put a brake, so I don't plan to skid. And what about stock bars? I think I'll better put something like Nitto RB-021.
