How was the commute today? Continued.

I had a nice ride in. I'm dreading the trip back tho, the chance of rain is 60%. I hope it waits until 4:00.

Awesome! Quite a bit warmer than last week at 45F...almost too warm for hard riding. I put a new top speed on my Soho: 29.0 mph on the flat. I need to go for a climb and see how stable it is at high speed.

-32C with the wind chill... was nice to have my fg back (she was on loan) and brought the old girl to the shop to overhaul the bottom bracket and install a new saddle.

Oh, today was so nice. Mid 60's F and NO wind. Tampa Bay was smooth as glass. I thought I was going to see a sunrise as I crossed the Bay, but it never made it up until I was already heading through the city. I wore my shoes instead of the open toed sandals. Still sweating a lot - drained my bottle of gatorade by the time I got to work.

Great commute to and from work today, even though it was -6F when I left the house this morning. The high today was around 3F.

Yes, we all talk about the weather, but we don't do anything about it.....except ask advice and try to buy the best clothes and gloves and shoe covers; try share our experiences on how we deal with it so others can benefit from our experiences. Well, I think that means we're doing something about it.
Oh the weather in in N. Florida is like spring...cool morning, balmy afternoons; come on this is December! I rode my NOS road bike to work today. I had to improvise how to carry one of my Detour Toucan panniers on my back and found a great solution of using a bungee cord around my waist clipped into the rack mounting ears and the shoulder strap over the shoulder.
The bike is a 2005 KHS Flite 700. Campy 9-speed with triple crankset. Pretty "aggressive" geometry, at least to me. A very different riding experience compared to the Nashbar X-frame cyclocross frame I built up last April.
I rode it to get a better feel for it and to make sure things would work on on a longer group ride I'm hoping to do tomorrow.
What a fun day riding it. Looking forward to tomorrow; hoping the weather holds.

I was dripping again this morning as I almost ate $5!T on the way to work from physical therapy (old sports injuries - shoulders). NOLA was in a flash flood warning. I had to take to the sidewalk along one section of 4-lane because the water was deep on the roadway. The water was about three inches deep on the sidewalk give or take. As I approach a high curb (about 10 inches high) to drop down onto the roadway at a major intersection my front wheel hit some gooey, greasy clay under a few inches of water and slipped sideways several inches before grabbing the concrete curb.
No cars were involved (because the road was under water) but it still would have hurt to go down just then.I got hammered all the way to PT (about 2 miles), then all the way to work (about 5 miles). Full on rain kit. Helmet cover, rain jacket, my new Marmot rain pants, SealSkin socks - the works. We are in the wettest December in recorded history just now. Lots of sketchy moments lately. Been riding REAL tame too. Can't see potholes on flooded roads, lousy breaking distances, effed-up visibility. God help us down here. Ground is so saturated that my fence is starting to just lay down and hundred year old trees are just lying down too. Ridiculous.

Many downhill runs, and new brake pads! The old pads were almost completely gone, it feels almost like a different bike.

Today was what is supposed to be the last day of our cold snap and it was a frosty -32C this morning... I really like having my fg back as it is the perfect winter riding machine and my speed was really only limited by how much wind I could take.
It is supposed to get up to -8 tomorrow... woot !

Easy ride iin at 22 F ( -5 C). Took my time as I just didn't feel like rushing and my knee was unhappy this morning.

Mid teens (F) but comfortable. I need to service my hub. It's not engaging 100% of the time, so I sit there spinning madly and going nowhere. (Cold weather can cause this.)

18° F, clear, no wind. Really very nice, and the low angle sunlight had a sort of Dutch masters (the painters, not the cigars) quality.
vtjim- I was wondering what sort of hub you were riding. My last job (very interesting, more bike commuters than drivers at that job, we were crowding the break room with bikes), my boss was riding a Rollof and had trouble whenever the temps were mid twenties or below. He spoke with the importer and was advised to go to lighter weight lubricant for the winter, although I can't remember what they recommended.

In our area we also had rain but it froze and the roads turned into a skating rink. Going home from work last night I was the fastest vehicle on the road with my studded tires, passing many cars especially on the hills where the four-wheel variety sat and spun. I had one of the most enjoyable rides and secretly wished the City would run out of salt but alas this morning the journey was tough going through mounds of slush.

I am ready for the weather to stay cold for a while. We have had some big swings in temperatures lately in NC, and it's hard dressing for the commute when temps are in the 30s in morning and 60s in afternoon. We seldom get temperatures below 20 F, so I can handle our cold weather just fine. It's the wide swings that get to me.

I managed to get a small pannier to sit on the rack of my Curve without heelstrike. It works well, but it's a hassle to re-mount when getting off the train at the end of the ride, and you can't fold the bike with it on. I'll stick with a messenger bag or a backpack when I need to tote my laptop.

so this morning I heard on the local news that a bicyclist got run over by a car directly on my route. This is a busy 4-lane road with a MUP right next to it. Report didn't say if the cyclist was on the MUP (crossing a street) or on the 4-lane road. But it did kinda hit close to home for me.
That and having to run errands and temps just above zero made me take the car....

Beautiful weather this morning. Cold and clear. On the way in, I saw a cyclist going the opposite direction without a headlight. Didn't really think much of it because the street is well lit, but shortly after seeing her go by, I heard some yelling. The car in front of her was turning in to a driveway. I don't think the car signaled, but she had tried passing on the right when the car started slowing down.
I'm just glad nobody got hurt.

Nice ride in. Temps in the low 30s, bright sunshiny morning. Despite the headwind occasionally gusting to around 25 mph, I managed to make it the 7+ miles in a little over 30 minutes. When I started commuting and riding regularly earlier this year, that kind of time was exclusively reserved for days with a tailwind - not anymore!
