Didn't commute today, but I went to the LBS and picked up my Schwinn Traveler and towed it home with my Surly Big Dummy. I also took my daughter on a 6 mile library bike ride. It was a great day for bike riding. Oh, almost forgot. I received 3 "get on the sidewalk's", and 6 horn beeps from downtown motorists. One old lady beep and passed me then when I reached the stop she quickly made a right turn on red.

Hit a milestone for myself. for the first time, was able to bike all the way to work and all the way home. 29.5 miles round trip, including a couple of steep hills.

I know that's small potatoes for most of you, but I'm new at this and out of shape...but getting better every day

Small potatoes nothin', that's a solid commute. Good work!

Last day of spring break, and I'm still recovering from the week of awesome skiing that Ullr decided to bless us Alaskans with. Beautiful blue sky and a lovely 15*F lured me out this evening to run some errands. Went out to the Coastal Trail, which is still too haggard from the recent snowfall to enjoy on bike. Downtown streets were, as always, fun.

Rode a few miles out of my way into the Fairview ghetto, just to remind myself why I enjoy no longer living there. The Monkeylights set off a bunch of hooting and hollering from a pack of bums on the way out. Swung by Glacier Brewhouse to refill the growler, dropped by City Market for some produce, and took the streets all the way home.

Sunset touched off some wicked alpenglow on the freshly whitened Chugach as I turned east into the home neighborhood. Had to pull over for a bit just to soak it in.

After checking with the weather channel I made a change in my normal route to work this morning. The wind was gusting from the east at 63 kilometers per hour and to get to my destination I have to travel northwest. The different route keeps the wind on my right side for half the distance but for the final run to my work place the wind was on my back. Wow, did I fly! I felt like a little kid, I couldn't stop smiling, it was great! Felt pretty good at work, changed, unlocked the side door for the employees, turned on the lights and the heat, (still only 4 degrees). And to my surprise who should come through the side door with his bicycle but my brother. Now I do not lecture on the benefits of cycling to anybody but from time to time I catch my brother looking at my bike when he thinks no one is watching. I hope this becomes as regular for him as it is for me.

My bike, aka "Captain Jack" refused to go out in the snow this morning.... I didn't argue.

Bikes: Many

I didn't get to post on Friday. I made it all winter without crashing and now it's spring like and I hit a pot hole and crashed. I followed a car to close and realized to late that he was staddling a huge crater of a pothole. By the time I noticed it it was to late and down I went. I got up after I caught my breath, staightened my handlebars and I was on my way. Hurt my shoulder and rib cage, I'll live but I'm moving pretty slow this weekend.

I've been off the bike mostly for about 9 months due to an injury. I'm so out of shape it's irritating me.

Yesterday I biked from the 2/3-way point (a MARTA station). About 3 miles, raining on and off. It's good to be back.

Today, I'm feeling the burn. I missed my first bus by several minutes, rode the above station and watched my second bus go by ahead of me so I kept on riding. At about that point, I got passed by a lycra-clad weekend warrior. Luckily for me, I was able to engage my Clydesdale Gravity Drive and keep up with him on light rolling hills for about a mile until our routes diverged. (I'm, of course, dressed very Fred and carrying a garment back pannier with a non-aerodynamic soft-sided lunchbox slung off it on my expedition-sized rear rack). The look on his face () and the double-take he did when we went over a speed bump, he heard my brake hoses slap my frame, and he looked back to see me keeping pace and waving: oh, that made my ride!

It truly is good to be back even if riding aggravates my repetitive stress injury.

It was a good ride in at 4 C ( 40 F). The last 4 days have been in the 40s F. Lots of rain over the weekend, and at least the frogs hanging out in the ponds around the interchanges are having a good time. They all sound pretty. I hate the time change, because it will set me back in the dark for another month or two.

not bad temps just windy as hell 40+ gusts made the down hill parts of my commute pretty intresting as they were not quite head winds more like coming in at an angle had to lean into them and i dont get it no matter which direction i seem to ride im always going against the wind how does that work

Cool but not cold with temps in the mid 40's, I wore a short sleeved shirt, light jacket, and shorts this morning and was comfortable. What started as a moderately heavy mist turned into a light shower just after starting out. The Potomac is running high with all the recent rain and snow melt; some parts of the MV Trail are flooded or covered with debris. Four Mile Run, as it passes under Rt. 1, is most notable as the water will nearly reach your bottom bracket and, right after passing under the 14th Street Bridge (heading north), the trail is covered with litter: branches, sticks, bottles, cups, etc-rideable but, be careful. Other than wet shoes I really enjoyed my ride in, my legs felt stronger than they have in weeks. It looks like the rest of the week will be a big improvement over today.

The vicious torrents of The Great March Nor'Easter continue. Our basement's flooded; the sump pump's working, but it's largely ineffectual, since the outflow line terminates in a spout just outside the basement window. (A bit of "circular reasoning" on the part of the contractors who installed it.)

The ride in was enjoyable, since the storm's 25mph winds were right on my back.

I'll be interested in getting a report from buzzman about his new raingear.

Another nice ride this morning, all in the dark this time, and with a bit of a headwind. There are at least two other bike commuters in my building today; we exchanged greetings in the locker room.

I love this thread, too bad I haven't really added to it yet. After a few months of 26mile RT commute, 4-5 days a week. I've been laid-off. So now I'm going to have to find my own routes to keep the miles coming. I've never been unemployed, I'm kind of excited. Just in time for spring as well.

Guess I'll commute vicariously through all over you folks.

A bad start for daylight savings time for me. Had a flat in the dark 2 miles from home. I briefly thought about walking home but found a streetlight to fix my tire under. The culprit was a chunk of glass that was big enough to spot just by inspecting the tread. It was only my third flat in three years of bike commuting, and the other two happened on the same day, so I can't complain too much.

Dark - very dark. While I'm happy with what it does in the evenings - my mornings are commuting in the dark.....again. Very wet ride as well and the sand from the storms is sticking to me like glue - and I use full fenders. I look like I just got done with Paris-Roubaix when I'm rolling into the office. Nice look but super messy.

Mid 40's, brisk north wind, but dry. Not too bad a ride I ride into the wind for only about half of the ride.

If it doesn't change directions, it'll be a tail wind on the way home, yay!

Bikes: Giant Defy Advanced 0, Rivendell- Sam Hillborne, Montague folding bike.

What a nice ride today. Snow and ice gone, roads washed off from a couple of days rain. About 40f with a tail wind.

Had bike prepped for spring by LBS last fri. Knobbys off, 700x32 road tires back on, new bar tape (Lizard Gel) new brakes, lube. Ride back down to 55 minutes.

Sun forecast for this afternoon.

I too had a tailwind. I rode by the Muddy and Charles Rivers and both were flooded, the worst I've seen since the storm that flooded the Kenmore T station several years ago. There was a continuous sheet of water flowing down the steeper hills and some deep puddles that spanned the entire side of the road. Two special safety considerations came to mind for these conditions: deep puddles may hide potholes, and brakes require more distance to stop. I saw one other cyclist on Goddard Ave by Larz Anderson Park.

I was drenched by the end of my 14 mile ride, from rain and sweat, but not too uncomfortable and not cold at 41 degrees (in addition to the wind). It felt great though to get into dry clothes. My experience in dressing for extreme conditions of rain and/or cold is that it will be tolerable for about 10 miles, and then I endure the rest. This was one day I really had to ride to answer that usual question, "You didn't ride in today, did you?"

Bikes: Trek 830 Mountain Track Drop bar conversion

20 mph headwind and flooded trails. Detoured around the flooded trails. Can't detour around wind.

The rain let up before I left for work, so I stayed dry, so that was good. Fenders again paid dividends in the puddles. I even sought out a couple puddles on the way in to wash some of the mud off my tires from one one of my detours. Hopefully between it not being high tide anymore and the passage of time (and floodwater), the ride home will be less affected by the elements.

A little windy today and, of course, darker, but also a little warmer. I got by without wearing my underlayer of knit gloves this morning.

The commute is getting a little easier as my legs start to remember what it takes to get up hills.

I am still getting used to my new Sparrow bar.

Beautiful. 47F, calm, gorgeous pink and orange sunrise, mist rising on the American. Met up with two buddies for a pre-work ride.

windy!

right in the face the whole ride in and off the back and shoulder on the ride home. Really strong gusts. I was dodging run away umbrellas down Commonwealth Avenue. Came back on the bike path met up with another cyclist on similarly outfitted rig- a little more upscale than my bike but nice set-up. Flooding everywhere.

BUT used my new rain gear- a Shower's Pass Elite jacket with hood and my new paclite Gore Tex pants- both performed beautifully in a constant downpour arrived at work dry and got home dry- bravo!
