Wanted to ride=no time this morning and 100 when I got home=got time in the morning and gonna give it a try. Just started 2 days ago after 30 years-just over a mile the first day and almost 5 yesterday(we live in a very hilly area of Mississippi believe it or not. Love my new Trek FX 7.3. When I don't ride, I still look at it. lol

Sculptor7 08-02-11 07:26 PM

An easy 17 miles. Love my Trek!

stonefree 08-03-11 02:39 AM

Love my Trek too, and have been completing 12-13 mile rides daily at the city park, but I'm seriously switching, as of right now, to night riding for awhile until the local 100 degree temperatures subside just to be on the safe side at my age. Will be switching to a much older and heavier bike for this, with lights etc., but it's still fun.

my first 15 mi. ride today. later this month I'll be able to post in the 65+ thread! I don't ride every day. Some days my wife and I walk (usually 4 to 5 miles), or we hike in the mountains (Santa Monica/Reagan Ranch/Lookout Trail most recently, but mostly up at Big Bear). Still, I'm working up to 20 miles by the end of the month. Then I'll be all over the mountains in October for deer season. I wonder how much better it would be if my bike fit me? It's too big and I'm sure not set up right. Trek 420 I picked up for $30 and cleaned up.

You've got some nice country for hiking! Amazing you can stop and get on the bike.

In my opinion a better fit will make your ride A LOT better. When I first posted, I couldn't get comfortable on the nice hybrid I bought about 5 years ago. I spent 5 years fussing with it, then found a used bike (Giant Boulder) that felt like it had always been mine--fits like my favorite pair of sneakers. My mileage has increased dramatically and my comfort and enjoyment even more. I just lucked into mine. If you search "bike fit" you'll find older posts with advice on how to get a good fit.

thanks for the encouragement. I have read a lot about bike fitting, but the final recommendation usually is 'get a professional' to do it. I doubt they do it for free and times are tight. I will try the yard sales and thrift stores to see if I can't find a better frame. This one is just too tall. I don't use the drop bars so I'd like straight handlebars too. No racing in my future for sure.

UPDATE: I measured the frame 58cm, I'm 5'9", think I need something smaller. I tilted the seat back a touch, raised it 1/2" and raised the handlebars 1" or so. Short test ride was OK, but it's 100F so I'll wait for a longer test till evening.

Beautiful, gorgeous day - from 62 - 80F during ride.

Pedaled 4 miles to the pool, swam 45 minutes, then another 30 miles of gorgrous riding.

Sculptor7 08-03-11 04:16 PM

30 miles at a brisk pace (for me) 14.2 mph. Nice day.

John_V 08-03-11 06:04 PM

8.25 miles after work. Came home, sun is out. Put everything in the truck, sun is out. Get to the bike path, sun is not out. Two miles into the ride, very dark clouds appearing. Five miles into the ride, you can almost smell the rain coming. I did one lap and came home put everything away and that was 3 hours ago, the sky is still full of dark clouds and I'm still waiting for it to rain. This Florida weather will drive you nuts.

55 miles today, wind was less intense than Monday. Just about hit every light red, a lot of stop and go. Huntington Beach was nice, 80 degrees or so.

YokeyDokey 08-04-11 08:27 AM

Record high of 113 here yesterday, lovely. But since bad decisions make good stories, I took the vintage steel out for a 50-minute 16 miler late. Stupid? Probably. Am I bad-@ssed? you betcha :-p

Unusual ride (for me) last night - Rode with my graduate students and other members of my research group to a local restaurant in a park for dinner. It's a 5 mile ride each way, along a nearly flat bicycle path along the river. There were 11 of us ranging from experienced serious cyclists on road bikes or fixies to 50 lbs. overweight. A couple have hardly been on a bicycle since they were kids. I'd guess our average speed was 10 MPH and one young woman took a couple of spills, but was unhurt. Overall, it was a very nice evening. I secretly hope that those who don't usually ride enjoyed it enough to think about maybe getting out a little more often...

rck 08-04-11 02:23 PM

18 miles this A.M. sunny, but cool only about 80.

JanMM 08-04-11 04:47 PM

Not yet today but rode to and from work yesterday (19.5 miles) and then 8 miles in the evening on the tandem.

DnvrFox 08-04-11 05:31 PM

A more relaxed day after about 6 hours of various workouts yesterday. 7 miles on the 'bent, a good resistance session this am, and about 7 laps in the pool.

8.52 this evening

John_V 08-04-11 06:53 PM

Finally had a day where it rained while I was at work and not afterward. Went to the bike path and did a nice 20 mile ride and then another 7 after dinner with the wife in the neighborhood. The earlier rain cooled it down quite a bit and made it a nice afternoon for bike riding.

Sculptor7 08-04-11 07:32 PM

A group ride with the club that was only 13 miles but one short steep hill I want to avoid in future.

Shifty 08-04-11 07:41 PM

It was hill ride today, 41 miles and 5 major climbs. I don't know the total gain, but there were 8%, 10% and one stretch of 11%. It was a nice day for it, cool and dry and no traffic to speak of.

BikeWNC 08-04-11 07:42 PM

Got up on the BRP this afternoon for a 16.5 mile ride in overcast cool but humid conditions. I managed a few high cadence power intervals while climbing some of the 1850' on the ride. I was surprised how well I was able to spin a 100 cadence on the lower grades. At this rate I'll be back riding that century in no time.

M_Wales 08-04-11 08:17 PM

I do wish I had time for longer rides and do plan on making some one day. Did 26 miles this evening and the best part was my avg. speed for the ride was 17.5 mph. Not going to win any races, but I'm very happy with it.

MinnMan 08-04-11 09:25 PM

37 miles including 29 in a small group ride (4 of us) out to the western suburbs and back. It was a pretty fast ride and I'm happy to report that I put in some very creditable pulls. My ability to pull when riding with the faster riders of my club is finally close to where I want it to be. Others in the group can still pull faster and longer of course, but that will probably always be true. One difference between now and before is that I can put in a decent pull (say, 25 MPH for a mile) and be followed by somebody who then ups the tempo (to 27 MPH, say) and not be in danger of being unable to hang on the group's wheels. There's nothing more embarrassing and frustrating than pulling and then immediately being dropped when you finish.

17 miles local bike path nice weather plesant ride

Bob Ross 08-05-11 09:00 AM

Commuted to work this morning, so I'm in the middle of what will be a 22 mile ride by tonight.

(fwiw, I did the usual 25 mile Wednesday loop & also got out real early Tuesday morning for a 16 mile quickie.)

bobthib 08-05-11 10:10 AM

Did a rare Friday AM ride with 5 others. We put in about 35 mi, and averaged 19 or so. Hit a new personal best on a flat and level sprint - 31.8 mph. Wish I had been paying more attention as my goal is to hit 32.5 in a sprint. Maybe tomorrow...
