Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I think your analogy is a good one. Good marketing on a inferior product in both cases. You can't pretend that they are actually the best available.

Again, who has used Windows, Mac OS X and Linux as a desktop environment for an extended period of time (say longer than 12 months). Unless you have, you have no grounds to make comment on this subject. All you have in marketing hype.

Bikes: 8 bikes - one for each day of the week!

Hmmm. Tiger, ship me that bike, and you'll get your money out of it.

As far as the whole IP thing - I can see everyone's. That means I know who is pissing away their employer's money, and who's at home.

Agree with you on the product marketing re: bikes disagree in IT. I dont think the marketing plays that big a role. I havnt seen too many corporates with 100,000 users letting people pick and choose what software they can have because of freedom of choice? Maybe they have a job to do and should use the tools provided without whinging about (typically MS).

Regarding, the second point, in IT for 15 years, my wife and I work for 2 of the three OS's you describe So I think I can make a comment. But I forgot if it aint bespoke then flame it...right?

Hey Exy, how come you mod ***** and ****, but you let all the IP crap fill up the thread?

Thats a bit harsh dude. Sure, you're in a good position because you've now had extended experience with all 3 in aprofessional environment, but I don't think I need 12 months solely on a Windows box to know how average it is in every way.
I'm by no means a zealot - there are things on every program/OS I wish were all condensed into one 'Super App/OS' - but OSX is such a joy to use and so intuitive and rock solid, I don't see why anyone would use Windows unless they're a tight-arse or absolutely have to use some obscure Windows specific software, in which case you'd probably be better off having a dedicated Linux box anyway.

Actually, after spending 6 months or so on a brand new 20" iMac when I was working for Monash, I'd go so far as to say just get an iMac and be done with it - 2500 bucks will get you a 17" tft, 2 gig of RAM and a 180G HD. 3200 will get you the 20" with 2 gig ram and a 250G HD.

All the computer you will ever need.

(Well, until Moores Law bites you in the arse.)

pshaw, royale is a developer with years of experience on all platforms, so although his opinions are forthright, they hold water. There's nothing 'bespoke' about Apple either, they're a ****ing corporation turning over millions of dollars. If that's your idea of 'bespoke', there's this cool bike company called Cervelo you should check out.

I have no control over the IP crap. But if it's an issue, we'll ask Tom to remove it from his sig. It probably is wasting resources.

Tom, do you get the hint?

Thanks.

Yeah, asking price minus shipping = fark all.

I'm p¡ssing my employers money away. I bet he's really, really upset.

Crap, I should go do some work. Wish I didn't enjoy a good arguement so much.

Bloody developers
Pshaw (Bsc software engineering)

I just dont see the point in getting all hot about it.
At home I use what I choose.
At work I use the tools provided to do my job. Sometimes they aint the best. Sometimes the things others dont like make them easy for me to work with.

FWIW, I'm on a PC (work) now, we also have a mac (work) & a linux box as a media centre.

Oh yeah, and I hate computers. Anyway wanna pay me my salary and let me re-train?

on osx, what are you guys using to resize images? I dont have photoshop and by the time ive got a picture down to the kb limit for sites like this using Preview its a bloody thumbnail.

And how bout the new intel macs which can now be partitioned using BootCamp to run osx and XP? Methinks macs market share about to rocket.

just had no power had a GU at the start at the start of the second lap and that perked my up a bit but other than that it was all rahter diapointing . oh well, have a month till the next round there to sulk. in the meantime its off to CCCC this weekend for my 1st foray into road racing

still cranky tho

Hah! That only works if we have static IP addresses.

What about the other grades? Just curious, rode 25km on Peat's Ridge Rd on Sunday so would like to know how I stack up against the E graders.

Kids doing great, eating and crapping like a racehorse. And every time you remove a nappy she goves you the golden shower, 3 in a row. Also likes crapping when the nappy is removed

Same thing happened last year, I missed the first RR and went up on the wednesday to ride race simulation (yep just like Lance ) Anyways, my reco time would have won c grade, I went up there on the Saturday full of confidence and got dropped on the way back 1st lap
All the "big guns" turned up and almost every grade went 5 mins faster.

I generally don't give a toss about the OS, I wasted far too much time in the 90s trying to sell VMS against UNIX when open systems were the fashion. These days the OS is just a commodity like the hardware, it's the application and what you can do with the information that gets the punters excited. At the desktop end of things Microsoft have just done a really good job of tying end-user tools in tightly with their OS so you "can't do without it".

I'm with you Willie, I'd rather be repairing bikes or doing landscaping, but doing network administration and Rdb and Oracle DBA work pays much better

I am so looking forward to this Giro. Evans has got to be a favourite for this ballbusting stage.

Thats it, I'm spending the money on RAI again, and throwing a big Giro BBQ on Saturday the 13th. Darlinghurst. You're all invited.

Yeah, I'll probably go over to Roto Vegas to watch some of the Worlds. Downhill day should be full of high speed carnage

We'll probably organise an excursion with the lads for a trail ride in the morning followed by beer and spectating in the arvo.

ok, maybe I missed the start of that funny Jan webspace... so apologies if I sound dumb(er)

Just had a look on the official Jan homepage unsing google translate and it's a crack up!

e.g.
Yesterday after the goal entry in Porrentruy I was completely beautifully broken. I believe, each muscle did me pain. Nevertheless I felt in the best way. Because of the knee I did not feel anything.

That were my first 3.4 running kilometers in this year. Beautifully war's
