Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Hi Badsac, If you are serious about some new wheels give this guy a call. Greg Ryan @ precision cycles 9525 7552. I cannot say enough good things about Greg and his wheels. He can basicly gat any thing you want and build it up for you. I think he has been the main mech for all the large compaines in the past and been trained by the techies at the factories etc etc. Don't be put off by his calm/slowness oon the phone ( I think he has discovered ten pin bowling & alcohol recently). You have nothing to loose.

Ah no, it's those cranks! I have them, the arms flex so much I can hit the chainstays with them. They're utter sheit. I'm going to replace them with some XT's or if I become magically rich, some Extralight E-Bones. I have a serious crank fetish which I thank my old Syncros Revolution cranks for.

Soul Edge hubs, Open Pro rims, Wheelsmith DB aero AE spokes, Alloy Nips I can do for A$1218. If you want the ceramic bearing Soul hubs, total is A$1411. Weight should be sub 1400g. If you want alternative rims, I'd have to look into it, but the price should be the same for comparable designs. I can also do Zipp 303 and 404's for A$2222 as a very naughty grey import.

Avatar is a still from a Dwarves video clip. My little dig at little Johnny and his immigration policy.

Thanks heaps for that. The few tiems I venture out into the main crap that's this forum I find sploodge all over everything about Mike Garcia and his wheels. Seeing as wheels will be the next thing I get for my bike, I've always been keen to find out if there were any local equivalents I could go with when the time comes. So would he be good at helping a relative noob like myself through the parts selection process, or does he prefer people to already know what they want?

Don;t know about the arms, but I'm just about sawing through my front deraileur when I'm up on the big ring going hard, even in the seat.

That's not to bad is it, in a really fabulously megaexpensive way? I'd end up paying around the same for some Easton or Crysomemore ****e. I'll have to do some googlign to see what it's all like.

You have to understand that the reason prebuilt wheels became popular is that it took the hassle out of finding a good wheelbuilder. When they're few and far between, you either throw up your hands and just get Ksyriums or get some handbuilts by guys like Mike Garcia or Steve Gravenites or whoever.

Best wheels I ever had built were by a woman called Katie who used to run Bicycle Hospital in Nth Melb but has since retired to the Blue Mountains. However, Petri at Pushi in King Street does a bang up job and I use him for most of my builds.

Did a calc on those wheels. Cross three 32h front and rear, the first build is 1485g, second build with the lighter hubs is 1433. Sub 1400g if you go for funky lacing like radial front, x2/radial rear. Sub 1330g if you then go with lighter rims like the IRD Cadence, or about 1350 with DT RR1.1's.

Ksyrium SSL SLs are 1600-1624g on average.

What sort of dollars are they there days?

whats the consensus on Mavic Cosmic Carbone SL's? they seem to get a good wrap from ppl ive tlaked to ( not all of them own the wheels). for 1350 odd from probike kit they seem like a good deal.

i don't think you can ship wheels from probikekit. freight prohibitive because they exceed standard cubic weight limits. check the website for details on wheels. pretty sure it says UK or europe only

I'd only edit the choice words, not the whole post.

By the way, I am still working on my new website. I had to call in the professionals. The hype is off to a slow start.

They're 1820g and the rims are literally just an aluminium rim with a carbon fairing glued on. Not a bad choice for the flats or rollies, but don't think they're anywhere near Zipps just coz they have a bit of carbon.

Oooooh! Have you seen these?!?!

*drool*

320g mountain bike rims!!!!!

they would be good for a ITT.

I have seen a few chaps race on them. Heavy, aero and pretty strong I have been led to belive. They are an alloy rim with a carbon fairing so your brake pads don't need changing. I have seen a few older guys riding with them on all the time around the Eastern Subs club rides, never really on the faster training rides. I wonder how stiff they are? $1350 ODD is pretty cheap, I had a pair in my hand 2 years ago in the USA that were around 1700 US.

I'll be doing the 210km one with a group of about 20 mates. Hope the weather is as good as it was last year.
