if it was me ( which it isnt) just give it a good rub back all over, cover up the chrome, hit it with some undercoat, wait 12 - 24 hours re rub it back then spray it. going back to metal is a bigish job and not worth it for that application.

that reminds me that i have to pull my finger out and respray my car somtime this year.

jock 05-09-06 05:23 PM

Had my first ride in 3 weeks last night. Man, I'd forgotten how dull stationary trainers are!

Shoulder felt fine. If I can get down onto the hoods comfortably by Friday I'll do the coffee run this weeked. Anyone else up for it? Pshaw? climbo?

Since this is a bike forum, I dunno what their policy is, even if they have one. (wanna cut in Expat?)

Probably best to use the pm function.

Now enough of this geek ****, back to talking about complete ****.

Man I hate the wind, its been blowing a full on westerly for about a week now, I hate it.
Im liking the new bike, I thought I would have been against compact geometry but Im liking it. Hey Jock when you get better do you wanna ride up to Maitland and back? Or could you just show me the route

Thought about just sanding it back, taping off the chrome bits and using some auto spray paint.

How long do want the paint to stick for????

1. Take it to a powder coater. Under $200 gets you frame and fork, zinc rich base coat, color coat and clear coat. Only downside is that you only get one color and you must tape the bb thread yourself. Also the paint is not very resistant to chemical attack, ie. poly paint thinners will strip it off.

2. Buy yourself a cheap sandblaster at the auto refinishing shop - I paid about $30 for mine. I use fine, hand selcted, world class, premium quality BEACH SAND from the local beach - plenty to choose from - about 2000km of it. Tools required - shovel and bucket. Note: for frustrated coal miners who like to get REALLY dirty, get a bucket full of ilmenite - it works much better than sand.
Find a big open space, put on your daggiest clothes, and a cheap pair of safety glasses, and go for it. This gets off all the paint and any underlying rust.
Prime with a light coat of etch primer - from a can, then with a 2 pack primer/surfacer. Alternatively, one or two coats of EtchPro (Epoxy etch primer) from a can.
Sand with LOTS of water to your desired finish - I go to 1200 grit, but don't start any coarser than 500 or you'll have to spray it again.
Spray the finish to suit yourself. I use one coat of base color, masking for multi colors, then a single top coat of clear polyurethane - MS clear is fine for a bicycle frame (and cars). The base coats dry in 5 minutes, the clear top coat dries in 10 minutes and cures in about 3 days.
This finish is almost indestructible, physically and chemically - stones bounce off it, paint thinners just make it cleaner. Polyurethane is much better than epoxy for impact resistance. The only downside is that if you breath the vapours when spraying it WILL kill you - so don't!!! (this really only applies to the clear top coat).

This is also how I paint radio controlled jets - and they have kerosene on them all the time - never damages the paint.

Hope this helps,
cheers

Now that's a plan!

The routes are easy, mix and match:

Industrial Smog Dr, onto Pathetic Hwy, then Country Bumkin Hwy after Hexham (30 kays)

or

either Pathetic Hwy all the way to Raymond Terrace or Industrial Smog Dr, over the Stockton Bridge to Medowie, left onto Richardson Rd to Raymond Terrace then left onto Raymond Terrace Rd (each route is 50 kays)

or

either Pathetic Hwy all the way to Raymond Terrace or Industrial Smog Dr, over the Stockton Bridge to Medowie, left onto Richardson Rd to Raymond Terrace , then onto Seaham Rd to Seaham then left onto Clarencetown Rd back to Maitland via Bolwarra (65 kays)

All good fun.

Just make sure you do this in full-on stealth mode as the removal of beach sand without a permit is in fact illegal on many beaches.

You might just get away with it if you enlist the aid of a platoon of 5-year-olds. ;)

Talking about sand blasters, when I was sanding what is now my beater, dad has the nerve to tell me after I finsihed sanding it, that work has one. Thats right I spent 6-8 hours sanding when I could have given the frame to dad and he would have had it done in 20min on a industrial sand blaster.

Im **** scared when it comes to dual lane traffic buzzing pass me at 110kmh while Im only cruizing at 30-35k.

Thylacine 05-09-06 06:08 PM

I sanded and Scotchbrited Royales' Ti Arete entirely by hand. It's theraputic!

However, if I can buy a media blaster for 60 bucks, I think I might start doing them in a 'speedblast' finish. (Called 'speedblast' of course because it only takes 20 minutes to do instead of 4 hours) The other option I'm considering is shot-peening, but that scares me. "Hi there, here's a 3600 buck titanium frame I want shot peened. Be careful though, the tubes are only 0.9 of a mil thick."

climbo 05-09-06 06:24 PM

mmmmm, sounds good, let's not forget, this bike was FREE. I could go buy a brand new one for $100 and not have this hassle. If it takes any more effort than some sanding and spray paint I won't bother.

Even if the paint comes off after 3 months I won't really mind, it's only for show and then the black will come through anyway and my plan will have worked. :)

matagi - pink, you should see the pink in my house, her whole room is pink, and #2 will be just the same I am guessing.

I have no fear. Except for my acrophobia. Lucky I'm short! Doesn't help me high up on the banking on the velodrome tho :D

You will overcome any fear of traffic if you ride up and down hunter street at breakneck speed every afternoon between 3 and 5:30pm for a couple of years. You might still be scared of bus drivers, but that's a normal human response

mmmmm, Mothers Day, doubt it, I'll be very busy all day.

Heavy low speed traffic is no problem. Thats called fun :D I ride past Maud Street amd a few schools around 3 o'clock. Its fun to see some of the looks I get, running reds etc etc. Nothing more fun than riding in the middle of the road on the white line passing all these slow moving or stopped cars. It drives them insane.

Its just when those cars start moving quickly I get afraid

I know the difference between a kangaroo and a wallaby.

Anybody here know the difference between a buffalo and a bison?

Thylacine 05-09-06 06:36 PM

Nope, but I do know where California is and can even point to it on a map.

It's a suburb of Brisbane, right?

climbo 05-09-06 06:38 PM

what is the difference between a kangaroo and a wallaby? They taste the same to me.

jock 05-09-06 06:49 PM

A wallaby is any of about thirty species of macropod . Essentially, a wallaby is any macropod that isn't considered large enough to be a kangaroo and has not been given some other name. There is no fixed dividing line. In general, a wallaby is smaller and has a stockier build than a kangaroo; a wallaroo is any of a few species somewhat intermediate in size between a wallaby and a kangaroo. Very small forest-dwelling wallabies are known as pademelons and dorcopsises.

Bison is a taxonomic genus containing six species of large even-toed ungulates within the subfamily Bovinae. Only two species are still extant—the American and European bisons.

The bison is often mistakenly called "buffalo", but the true buffalo is native only to Africa and Asia.

In Australia we have water buffalo that are creating environmental havoc in northern parts of Queensland and some parts of the Northern Territory

Wikipedia is your friend

Thylacine 05-09-06 06:53 PM

Thank YOU Wikipedia!

Odin 05-09-06 06:54 PM

<20kg = wallaby
>20kg = kangaroo
That's what the local ranger told us - we get wallabies in the backyard

Ritterview 05-09-06 07:03 PM

Q: What is the difference between a buffalo and a bison?

A: A buffalo is a hoofed creature that roamed the American Plains. A bison is what you wash your bloody face in, mate.
