Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Place: 6th / 14 in the 40-44 AG, 11th / 30 or so overall. Holy crap that was hard. Course is 4x ~14 mi loops with the S/F at the top of a climb.

Lap 1 was ballistic. Esp. the climb. I was going 400-450w up all the steep ramps. I crested the top still attached, field split in half.

Lap 2 I became dislodged on the climb with cramps. Field split all TF over the road, no concerted group anymore. I considered quitting... but glad I didn't. I knew half the race was behind me. A couple guys crested just a little ahead of me (~20s) and I knew I could TT my way back onto them. Lubin and Fern, good guys that I know personally. They were nice enough to let me skip a couple pulls once I caught them.

Climb on lap 3 - Lubin goes caput. Just me and Fern. I told him that I would cramp again if he climbed too hard. Which he didn't, and I think that was in both of our interests. Since I'm able to pull harder/faster on the flat.

Going into the final climb (lap 4). I know Fern is going to drop me and I'm hoping that I can ride Z2 to the finish since I'm freaking spent. Fortunately I was able to. Someone was gaining ground on me too, and was only ~10-15s off my wheel at the line. But I held it for a hard fought 6th.

Takeaways: I need to work on my conditioning more, specifically heat. Not that it was even that hot. I get so accustomed to riding very early so I should have done even just a few mid afternoon rides inland to acclimate. I think I had too much coffee too beforehand. End result is HR too high at mid to low zones - this doesn't help. I also found myself rationing water since I tried to survive with two bottles. Lessons for next time.
nice play by play. Good effort too. I think you cramped last race. Eliminate that and I see a podium in your future.

We were too tired to cook dinner, so we picked up a pizza on the way home from the airport.

Jackie demanded some attention. She does not like being left alone, obviously.

Band activity.

My favourite selection, even though the trumpets don't play a great deal, is Tancredi Overature at 8:40.

the bottom bracket area in my addict is now SO CREAKY. really ruins the vibe. after i changed the BB/sensors it was fine but has been gradually getting worse. i originally thought it was threaded but it was press fit, seemed to press in fully and correctly, but i wonder if i did something wrong. grrrrr

Does it also creak when you're out of the saddle? If not, check your seatpost. If yes, check your chainring bolts. If it's neither of those, I'm out of ideas.

The closure of a key road has forced me to completely change my June tour route in Montana. I was really looking forward to riding the Hiawatha Trail again. Not going to happen this year.

i don't really ride out of the saddle ever anymore, maybe a few seconds here or there, but i bet it still creaks then. i'll check it tomorrow.

it creaks up a storm around 70rpm cadence and 17-18mph steady state pedaling. as you get further away from those parameters it's mildly creaky but not as offensive, ghost pedal it and it goes away completely, and of course with coasting. chainring bolts would be a happy simple problem, will check it out. my fear is it's something to do with the seating/torquing of the BB itself. the surface that the special socket attaches to is so shallow that i had a hard time getting enough grip on it to definitively reach the (pretty high) torque spec, although i feel like i probably did. also not sure if/how much grease is supposed to be between the raw carbon shell of the frame and the BB. weird design.

When we get another dog, I will be walking regularly which will be helpful. Usual dog walks were 1.5 to 3 miles. We aren’t slated to get a pup around June. Then maybe I can enjoy a bearclaw.

for me a lot of it is bloating too - I think that at my size, just water weight from eating salty food can swing the weight a couple lbs in either direction. during the work week I meal prep overnight oats w berries and boiled eggs, and a veggie sandwich for lunch. so that's pretty clean living most of the time. dinner is often more unhealthy and accompanied by a couple drinks, although we do cook a lot and have some health recipies. and at least 1-2 nights/week w no alcohol.

I think big john hit a nuance that resonates with me - not restricting too much during the day. you end up snacking and just eating a huge dinner. it really is better for you to eat more during the day and have a modest portion before going to bed. helps w sleep quality too if you don't have a bunch of digestion to do at night. or so I think

Pretty sure datlas is the leanest regular contributor to this thread, or at least in lbs/in of height. Chris Froome body type.
I'm not blessed with a climber's physique at 6' and 170ish lbs. I can cut down to 165 lbs, but that means single digit body fat % and I lose some power. Physiologically, cycling is probably the sport I can be my best at, but I'm doing it anyway...probably be better at cage fighting or playing football, but I'm too nice of a guy for any of that.

As far as meals and maintaining weight, I try to make breakfast the main meal of the day. I'll then try to just snack throughout the day rather than do a lunch. Dinner is kinda relevant to whatever my energy expenditure was that day. If I did a big 5k cal ride that day, I'm really trying to wolf down some calories. I've also noticed since upping my during-ride carb intake, my post-ride hunger has moderated quite a bit.

Agree. One of my most frustrating one was actually coming from a creaky front skewer.

Poison ivy season. I seem to be more sensitive to it early on, after no exposure for months. Lower legs from weed eating.

I assume you are familiar with the 6-5-4-3-2-1 dose pack. Get it now from a witch doctor near you.
