Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

It is cool racing a summer thunderstorm back home, especially if you have some major tailwind action.

Don't worry, as long as the bicycle tires are on the road, you're electrically grounded and you can sustain a direct hit from lightning without injury.

The difference between me and you losers is you think you demonstrate your addiction at the cash register, while I prove it out on the road.

I'm riding in the rain tomorrow. At least I'm not doing 3 hours of driving and laying out a $33 entry fee plus $35 in gas and tolls to race in the rain.

My heart rate was through the roof last Saturday on a flat at a relatively slow speed. I decided I might be pushing things a little hard, so I took a week off the bike. Rode today, my legs are killing me.

Conclusion: ride more, ride harder, show my legs this sort of weakness will not be tolerated. That or, fingers crossed, ride them into nubs and get totally sweet robot legs.

I thought you guys should know.

Another difference between NYC and here.

Here there are essentially only two types of adults who use bikes for transportation: poor people and freaks.

Incorrect.

It normally takes 9 to 10 months for jobs to regain their pre-recession peak (in the post-ww2 era). The exceptions were the 1990s when it took 2 years and the 2000s when it took a little more than 3 years.

I couldn't help but reply because I get tired of the rants from motorists on how much of a "menace" cyclists are, and pedestrians are equally clueless though in fairness I've seen plenty of knuckleheads on bikes as well which is why my point was that it can be safer for all if we're more aware and respectful of everyone we share the road with at all times. It's funny how some people took issue with the different cyclist types as if the implication was that you had to fit in the ones presented when it was just to illustrate some of the different sub cultures in cycling. The irony with the motorist who stated we shouldn't be on the streets of NYC should keep in mind that for years the city has been trying to keep motorists out, especially the one person per car crowd, by making it tougher to bring your car in.

Get that fat rolling along in a erratic manner and the ensuing inertia can be quite menacing in the eyes of a MUP pedestrian.

I'm curious how cycling in suits and business attire works out for those people in the summer.

Without knowing your bike riding and health history, this post is meaningless to us. If you're new to the "sport," and you've neglected your health your entire life to the point where your Dr said you'll be dead in 5 years if you don't start exercising and eating healthy, then I can understand why your heart was protesting. The good news is that you will notice improvement the more you ride. Just keep within your boundaries for the first few weeks and months.

Oh yeah - put down the pizza, donuts and chips. Those are reward foods for only those of us in top condition.

3 days off the bike, huh? Consider your form gone. It'll take weeks to burn off that layer of fat you've accumulated in those 3 days.

I was mostly just being a smart ass and wanted to make a joke about sweet robot legs. But since you implicitly asked: 27 years old, lost 100 lbs in the past year, most to all of it on the bike. Diet is rigidly controlled (not doctor ordered, just personal choice). Still too fat for this sport. I'd still consider myself new, I put in 200-250 miles a week depending on class or work split between solo time and group rides. The goal is to try racing next spring. CX this fall, though.
