true true. why not just go for the raceblades? i suppose 'cause you wanted actual full fenders. they look very nice.

OneTinSloth 01-11-05 07:44 PM

i could've gotten the raceblades, and in retrospect, i probably should have, and i sort of with that i had...but i wanted the honjo hammertones. i actually bought them with the intention of putting them on that bar bike, but then i had the fenders, and it started raining before i got that bike together. raceblades were only a little bit less expensive than these, so i just decided to splurge a bit.

the mounting system is super nifty, if not a pain in the ass to install. the fenders come totally undrilled and you have to measure and do everything yourself. my only complaint about them is the nut for the rear brace rattled itself loose and fell off, along with this little ring that fits between the fender and the brace and keeps the brace from rattling...i found a replacement nut, but no luck for the stupid ring.

Just finished my first singlespeed, a 1983 Raleigh Olympian running 27" wheels, 42-16, Modolo Flash brakes, and Gipiemme CR Sport crank. This will be a two phase project of sorts as it is only single now but I'll go to a fixed/free flip flop hub in the future.

the stem is a DIMENSION, a company out of MN. I needed a shorter one to even ride the bike. The original (as in the original owners replacement for the stock stem) was super long. I was so stretched out, and the guy was shorter than me, I don't even think he fit the bike properly. It's a 58, a tad small for me maybe, but too large for this guy for sure. Maybe thats why he unloaded it, he was into road bikes otherwise anyhow, it still has the road pedals on it now. I just shmob around with street shoes, the pedals have just enough surface area. I need to get my egg beaters and shoes going, kinda chicken to tell yawl the truth. The tenderloin just isn'taint the place to get accustomed to em, gotta go to GG park er somethin. k, much more than you asked...

OneTinSloth 01-12-05 03:16 PM

i have two dimension stems. they're pretty nice for being just the basic QBP house brand....and they're pretty much the only quill stems that a shop can get anymore that are worth something...profile design still has a few, but nowehere near the selection of the dimension stems.

Here's my newly built up Fixed/SS Crosscheck. My first fixie ride, only taken her out once so far but I'm hoping to commute on Friday and try a little offroad fixie action over the weekend :)

i've seen a few bikes with rubber bands or bracelets on their hubs. is this just pride in a homemade wheel build?

Yes, partly that. It seemed like a fun thing to do with my first wheelbuild. Also it's a different way to show support for the LAF cancer fundraising. Plus the yellow bracelets go so well with the yellow Crankbros Candys :). I got the idea from another poster over on the www.mtbr.com singlespeed forum.

dolface 01-12-05 04:02 PM

maybe it's a variation of the old-school toestrap around the hub to keep it polished?

icithecat 01-12-05 07:40 PM

In the sixties all bikes had oiled leather straps around the hubs to keep them clean and shiny. So yes it is old school.

PhattTyre 01-12-05 07:53 PM

I made hemp hub cleaners for my singlespeed mtb. I meant to make more for all my other bikes, but haven't gotten around to it. They work well and save you from trying to get a rag in between the spokes to clean the hub.

Yea, take it slow and easy. Raise the bar as your comfort level rises.

I hadn't really considered that they'd maybe keep the hubs clean. I'm not convinced they'll make a lot of difference but I'll let y'all know how it works out.

I'm glad you're trying it. I hope it works for you too. Right now I have a very dirty DISS with a very clean Spot hub.

craigslist. I just lucked out. I was at a $500 limit and ready to start seriously looking, first morning, first page, there it was. $350, not bad. I hope you find one, someone may want to unload one here somewhere. I've been checking out pics of other peoples aeros, there's some nice bikes out there.
