Bikes: old school Giant Attraction MTB (where it all started),old school Schwinn High Plains MTB (XC and long ride duty), Mosh DJ3 (BMX basher), and Trek Bruiser 1 (freeride and full of mods and still growing)

if you're going to own it why not use it, if you correctly use a roof rack there is minimal to no damage. BUY A CAR = USE THE CAR, makes sense to me

The bike weighs exactly 30lbs.

I almost bought this one, but it weighed 40lbs.

word.

nothing wrong with using a car like that for what he's using it for. sure, it's a nice car, amazing engineering, etc. etc. etc... but in the end, it's still just a car.

Well, I wouldn't call myself 'big' at 5'8", 150lbs

Here's mine. The wheels roll, the brakes stop it. If I wasn't a roadie, I would probably invest a little more into mountain biking, but this works and is just as attracted to trees and rocks as anything else.

It's a Diamondback Something-Or-Other....

Awesome! I'm glad that the picture caused some distress for yet another alleged "Porsche/sports car purist."

Why take a truck when a sports car is so much more fun to drive and can knock hours and hours off of your trip time on long road trips?

I wonder what the practical folks in Germany were thinking when they designed integrated rack mounting points into the roof of their sports cars?

Heaven forbid that it get driven on dirt roads to get to great riding...

think about it, i get bored driving to a good ride and when i get there the ride is good and i have to drive home again, think about doing it in a porsche, tearing up the backroads and winding roads and just having fun the whole time you're out

yeah but won't it put stress on your bike? i mean, a your front dropout (?) fixed to the rack when it's pulling g's? it can't be good for your fork. not only that, but what about the rear rim? thats also clamped down.

i personally don't rag on x-mart bikes. most people just use those bikes for riding around town anyhow and if they end up getting into real off-road riding, most will end up trying to get something better and that will last longer. and yes, in the end, they are still just bikes.

Here's my (as I call it) bizarre take on a XC bike that I just finished building last night. I was too busy riding around the block in the dark to take pictures then, but now I'm ready .

Frame: 2004 Jamis Komodo FX.
Shifters and Derailleurs: 2005 SRAM X.9 triggers and derailleur and Xgen front derailler with PG-970 cassette and PC-990 chain (the powerlink is great! this is my first time using one ).
Fork: 2005 Marzocchi MX Pro ETA 105mm.
Brakes: Avid Speed Lever 7s with Avid BB7 disc brakes.
Seat: Thomson Elite seatpost with WTB Speed V Race and Salsa quick-release clamp.
Stem: Thomson Elite (I may change the length and angle later for a better fit).
Handlebars: Race Face Deus XC with Race Face Good 'n' Evil grips (why not? I wear gloves anyway ).
Crankset: 2005 Truvativ Holzfeller (a little overkill, I really want a Crank Brothers Cobalt ) with Gigapipe DH ISIS bottom bracket.
Pedals: Crank Brothers Mallet Cs. They actually work pretty well as non-clipless pedals too (nothing like really good platforms, but better than I expected).
Wheels: Mavic XC717 rims with Hope XC hubs and Wheelsmith spokes and some Salsa steel skewers.
Tires: Specialized Hemisphere Armadillo (should take care of thorns during my commuting, I hope). I'm trying out Continental tubes in them right now. They're really, really heavy, so I hope they work.

All-in-all, it weighs in at about 29 pounds.

The frame is from Jenson (and a couple other little parts). My local bike shop did the headset, bottom bracket, and cassette because I was too cheap to buy the tools. The wheelset was built for me by Universal Cycles. The rest of the assembly, housing, and adjustments were my doing .

It's not just I'm being a porsche purist, I'm, let's say, an efficiency purist. Obviously a road bike won't be efficient on the trails, or a DH bike won't be efficient on the road. But nothing can stop you doing so. This may be an extreme example, but makes my point. It's just not efficient for me.

Although you can get to your trails a little faster, you can never go as fast as driving without a bike on your roof, or you can never fit all your gear as comfortably as you fit them in a truck. These are facts, and I'm sure everyone will agree. About the roof rack, if there is demand, of course they will build it. They are making money out of this. I know people who wouldn't buy the car just because it doesn't have those mounting points; especially in North America which is a huge market for them.

Anyway, that's what I think . Now, let's see that Turner if you have a closer picture, looks like a nice bike

That's funny.

Correction, MUCH faster. Also, mere elapsed time cannot quantify the difference in driving-derived pleasure when compared to driving something like a truck.

You can always drive faster than a truck however. The rack limits the upper end, above 160 mph but only slightly affects cornering limits(due to a slightly higher CG). It's not an issue on public roads.

I have no trouble fitting as much gear as I and a passenger have need for week+ roadtrips, even with the back seat storage somewhat limited due to the roll bar.

Nope, they aren't facts, just your opinions based upon what seems to be a severe lack of experience driving, and road tripping, in the vehicle which you seem to know so many "facts" about.

All 996s and 997s, except for Targas and Cabs, have the integrated mounting points from the factory. I'm not sure what point you were trying to make there.
