Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bikes: 8 bikes - one for each day of the week!

Ahh. Let us all wish for one of the 4% of E Types that had the 12 cylinder and manual transmission...

pretty sad behaviour from them really.
Mate, the 6-cyl XK engine (which was first introduced in 1948) is a magnificent piece of machinery, especially when teamed with multiple SU carbies - far better than any ugly worked American V8.

The aim of the club is to promote originality so I'm not surprised the guys weren't interested in his butchered XJ. If he had turned up in a completely original car - even if it needed truckloads of work - they would have been all over him like a rash.

BTW, the E-type has triple SUs whereas the XJ only had twin SUs (although the American ones had Strombergs and the later XJs had fuel injection). Just thought I'd chuck that in - does this qualify me as a car nut?

I love the dash in those older jags, fighter plane cockpit style. I restored an old ford falcon from 1964 (ex parkes police car) in my early 20's and it cost me heaps for then. The cost of keeping the jag healthy would be a bit more I'd say.
Yep the car has great perv value, hubby has been stopped a couple of times by the police, just so they can drool at the car. And boy, does that engine wind up! Unfortunately, hubby enjoys driving it too much so I have only managed to get behind the wheel a few times.

You will never recoup the money you spend on restoration - far cheaper to buy a car that has already been done up (which is what we did). Doesn't actually cost that much to look after but then, we do have a hoist in our garage so we can do a lot of mechanical stuff ourselves. We also run on historical registration, so the on road costs are really low.

Only downside, you can't easily fit a bike in the back (just to keep this sort of relevant to cycling)

I only know SU and Weber carbs. Are Strombergs the ones that kind of look like little silver inverted teapots?

Strombergs sort of look like an SU that has had the top pushed in.

BTW, do you ski? If yes, where? We go to Park City/Deer Valley every coupla years - we quite like Utah and it's probably one of the few places in the US we would actually consider living. And no, we aren't LDS

We don't ski -yet. But we did go to Park City this weekend. We only moved here a little over a month ago. If you know where Provo Canyon exits on the Provo/Orem end, well, that's where we live. We're not LDS either.

Doesn't surprise me. I had a Jaguar/Rolls Royce business a few years back (why did I ever go near pommy cars? )
I had a sign in the workshop that said double labour rates if you wanted to watch... and I wrote underneath that 'or if you're a Jag club member'
Most of 'em only turned up after they'd really f****d something up... even then they'd still try and tell you how to fix it
Roller owners didn't interfere, just fought like hell over bills.
I'm glad to be away from the "Jag circus'.

Climbo - you just lost about 10,000 cred points.

You will have to buy a carbon and titanium Thylacine and equip it with carbon Record in order to regain some of those cred points. Either that or tell us that the purpose of the Volvo was to park it in a quarry and lob house size boulders at it

There are Sopranos reruns on at the moment on one of the channels - but at 11pm or something. All keen cyclists are in bed by then, or out drinking

I haven't seen a new series for ages

SWMBO's old man was in the enterainment industry (Vocalist/TV personality) and had a Rolls. Apparantly he was quite popular in the UK, so used to take an empty suitcase with him that he could pack with spare parts for the damn Rolls everytime he went over!

Also, have heard a rumour that Rolls owners had to sign a contract at sale specifying that it was never to be resprayed out of original colours, or Towed on a Tow Truck - tarnishing the image of the company. apparanrlty if you broke down you got a nice nondescript Rolls enclosed transporter that came and took your car away. anyone know if thats true?

far out, if jag owners dont like a 308 ( which is Australian by the way ) they must really get their knickers in a knot when they are used as donor cars for hot rods, which is quite popular

There are a lot of Rolls-Royce myths out there, that's just another one (not that I've ever bought a new Rolls-Royce and since they don't exist anymore except as a name on a BMW I guess I will never have an oportunity now.)

The 308 may have been made in Australia, but surely it was an American design. (Edit: no you were right, I just did a search and it is an Australian design dating back to the project start in 1964. Did we design any other engines in Oz?)

Yeah the lovely Jag IRS does make a nice rear end for a rod, but it still looks better in a jag

I have heard the same thing about the rolls, if they break down. It gets quickly rushed off, hidden away or they cover it with curtains so no-one else can see it stranded.

I am shopping for a new family car right now. Have already spent way to much on cars.

My current car was $9K and is so much fun to use, wife spends at least 10 times that on the family mobile. I feel like smashing my head against a brick wall everytime I wash her car as I discover a new ding.
