Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Just water for the short (<100k's) and cold days. On hot days or long rides I mix some staminade (or similar). I always drink 1-2 litres of water after a ride and eat a BIG bowl of Special K, Muesli, and banana's. It's easy to shovel down, diggests easily and has a low GI.

Bikes: how long have you got?

BTW Hitchy, I've been psyching myself up for the sprint to Frankston tomorrow. Wattsy gritts his teeth, closes his eyes and visualises the ride..."My thighs are made of steal, I will not give way at red lights, I will not let any schmuck into my spot...damn it where'd the pack go...wattsy visualises the lonely ride from Patto river to Frankston...
stick with me buddy......we'll get you there!!...I'll see you B4 the start & have a yak...basically, you've gotta get closer to the front.....that way you don't get caught out by 'roundabouts, lights etc.....ya gotta be near the front at the Mordy 'roundabout or you're gone....mostly the traffic that we're 'supposed' to give way to....***** 'em selves & actually give way to us....he who hesitates is lost!,

cheers,

hitchy.

Why don't you just get up at 8:30, then wait for them at the Mentone Pub?

About 100 yards b4 the roundabout....the big green road sign on the left. It's nearly exactly 1000m from the bend to the line.

Maxim in the bidons if it's a race, long day, hot. Then gatorade and/or coke from servos etc (along with petrol-flavoured water form the pump taps) to get me home, depending on my state.

You'll be in for a quiet night, mate. Yer better off staying at home watching your 1988 Tour de France highlights taped over 3 weeks of Ch 9's Wide World of Sport with Ian Chappell and Mike Gibson......

Do you want the definitive answer, or do you just wanna know what we do? As I'm sure you know, there's tonnes of good info on this site (and some crap).

Are you more interested in hydration or carbs during the ride?

Even though I'm two thirds through a nutrition degree (rah, rah..a degree...ooo, what a big fkn toss), I don't have all the answers; I've been bogged down with bio-fukn-chemistry for so long that I've forgotten a lot of the "superficial" nutrition. I reckon I knew more about calories and stuff when I was a bimbo gym instructor.

I'd say the other guys should know more about eating and drinking on longer rides/races.

In the colder months I rarely ride for more than two hours, so I only take water, and sometimes don't even touch it because I can't be stuffed stopping for a piss.

I really depends on how far and fast you'll be going, and what you've eaten before. Assuming you've had the "normal" Aussie breakfast including ANY processed food, you most likely would've had enough sodium, etc, to not worry about electrolytes for a ride sub two hour ride in cool weather, so water should be enough.

If you wanna top up your energy, you might wanna look at those carbohydrate gels, but gastric emptying varies somewhat at different intensities, so (and this is common sense) the slower you're going, the more "normal" food you can eat during the ride. Those fancy gels and expensive drinks are really made for rides longer than 90 mins at race pace -- in my 'undergraduate' opinion, Gatorade (or whatever) is unnecessary for a <40km ride, unless you've not eaten all day, and it's very warm.

For rides longer than two hours, especially in warm weather, it's handy to have a drink containing some sort of carbohydrate, sodium, potassium, calcium (essential for muscel cell function), and maybe some magnesium, but you already knew that. The body can't "hold" water if sodium levels are low, so you can get in a lot trouble if you drink stacks of water in hot weather without taking in other nutrients and electrolytes (do a search on "hyponatremia").

There's plent of stuff on the net about post ride meals. The latest I heard (in some 2004 lectures) was to get high GI foods into ya in the first half hour....etc, etc, blah, blah...the muscle "suck-up" glucose quicker when you've just got off the bike.

(jeez I'm SH1TTIN' on)

Rehydrating is a tricky one, and I never really got a straight answer from any of my lecturers. The problem is, water and alcohol are the two things that begin to absorb almost immediately through the gastric wall (the rate of absorption is obviously effected by other stuff in ya guts), and everything else is absorbed through the gastro intestinal tract. So, if ya get back from your ride dehydrated and low on sodium, you just can't skull two litres of water before anything else has had half a chance to digest because the water will just go straight through ya.

Anyway, I wanna get to the bike shop......

PMP ROFLMFAO!!!!! Magnificent!!!!
I'd sit there watcihng that crap for what felt like an eternity, waiting for the TDF graphic to go up behind Chappelli's head, then I'd dive for the VCR that was the size of a mattress and hit "Play" & "Record" to tape a 5 minute CBS highlights pack from a stage or two, narrated by some seppo idiot who was trying to turn the Tour into an emotional roller coaster of epic proportions.....

what a waste of my yoof.

Oh yeah, what do we do?

I sometimes just stop at a servo and buy chewy lollies for the glucose, and chips for the salt.

Sometimes i buy cheap loillies like musk sticks from Safeway. On top of this I just take water; I don't like getting rippid off with all those gels, sports drinks and sports bars.

But having said ALL THAT, even in summer I'll rarely ride for more than three hours.

Come on mate.....let me remember 1994, will ya???
1994...WTF...I have to remember back to 1983!!

At the risk of being beaten up..I was a copper when I left year 12 for a couple of years...last Wednesday I bought some 'take away' for the family on the way home and couldn't help notice the two cops in the shop waiting for their food. I started smiling and they obviously took offence to me looking at them smiling and the conversation went something like this:

Male Cop: "can I help you sir?"
Me: "sorry mate I was just thinking about something"

Male Cop: "would you like to share your thoughts?"
Me: "yeah, but you're going to be embarrased"

Female Cop: "I think we've seen enough to not be worried about your thoughts"
Me: "OK, I was just thinking that you both would have been in Kinder Garten when I join the police force"

Male cop: Now a little wary says, "and when would that have been?"
Me: "1985"

They both then paid for their food and left without further comment.

The moral of this story is that although the female cop looked good, I felt guilty for thinking she looked sexy cause she was so young...Fark...I'M OLD!!!

Quick question on my quest for a bike. Looking like a Specialized Roubaix would be perfect for me with the seriously ****ty roads around here. Local bike shop has an 04 Roubaix Comp in my size which is a lovely ride. They want $4500, but I've got them down to $3900. Am I still getting ripped off, or is that an okay price considering? BTW, 05 specialized wont be here until December.

(And Thylacine, yeah I really would like to go for one of your bikes. But I don't think I'm the right person to do a bike with you at the minute. I just don't know enough and am to far away. Sorry.)

That sounds reasonable to me. A guy in a shop told me the Comp and Pro (?) are the same frames but with a different finish (one gloss, one not). You'd be lucky to get that frame frame for anywhere near $2000, so, stick everything on top of that, and it sounds ok to me.

It has Ultegra, right? And I forgotten what wheels.
